Extract from 'Childhood Memories' + by Ernest Dunford (of his Grandfather, William)

Dad comes home one night: ’Hey, Fatty and Ern, I’ve got a little job for you two. I want you to go over to your Grandfather’s place at Rodbourne Cheney (The Broadway actually) and pick up a Nanny Goat he’s promised me. ’ Did we mind? We ran all the way. Come over yer says Gramp and lets have a look at it. There she is he says and if these can catch er she’s yours. Well, after that a lot of chasing and puffing around I think Fatty suddenly tumbled to it that it was a damned great Billy we were chasing. I would never had known. That was the only time I remember seeing my Grandfather laugh. Well he did eventually give us the Nanny (old Nell) so off home we go. But was she strong – took us a couple of hours to drag her down to our place.

Memory of William by Rosemary Bazley

Gramp (William) always told the story that he left school at 12 & worked in a cherry orchard for 6d a week whistling to keep the birds away - don't know how true the story is as Gramp was always one to tell a good story & bearing in mind he had asthma. Also, he apparently wore earrings!

The house was a small cottage on Moredon Road, opposite what is now no.36 (where Ede & Reg Brown lived).

Florence Louisa would hide her pocket money in the roof thatch which sloped to the ground.

The cottage was very small. A door opened into the front room and there was a small scullery, 1 bedroom upstairs and 1 landing bedroom. It was demolished in 1958. Map from early 1800's shown below:
